Michela Calderaro
Michela A. Calderaro is a member of the Editorial Board of Il Tolomeo: A Postcolonial Studies Journal, University of Venice (Italy). She obtained her PhD in English literature at Università Ca’ Foscari, Venice, and has taught English and Postcolonial Literature in Italy and the USA. She was Associate Editor of Calabash: A Journal of Caribbean Arts and Letters, editor of the Ford Madox Ford Newsletter, and is the creator of the original Ford Society Website.
Dr Calderaro’s critical works include a book on Ford Madox Ford (A Silent New World, Bologna 1993), numerous articles on British, American, and Anglophone Caribbean writers, and a series of interviews with major Caribbean poets. In both her critical works and interviews, she tries to focus on issues of identity and memory, and on the way memory of the past is processed by the artist.
She has edited a collection of Creole writer Eliot Bliss’s unpublished poems, Spring Evenings in Sterling Street (Kindle and paperback edition, Amazon 2015).
Her biography of Bliss, Sheer Bliss. A Creole Journey, has just been published by the University of West Indies Press.

Water of the Doge
Born in Venice, Italy, surrounded by water, I have always been fascinated by the way water can forge your personality. I studied the works and lives of the most diverse authors but, when I encountered artists from the Caribbean islands, I felt a strong bond with them.
Indeed, delving into their works, I was enthralled by the recurrent presence of the figure of the mermaid - neither woman nor fish, always searching for a place to call home, always searching for her true roots. Finally, returning to Venice, I realized that, perhaps, I too was a creature from the water for, despite my many voyages, I always felt drawn back to the lagoon.
With the story of my mother’s birth, on a gondola, in the middle of the Venice lagoon, baptized with its water, I finally found my real roots.
Acqua del Doge
Nata a Venezia, circondata dall’acqua, sono sempre stata affascinata dal modo in cui l’acqua può forgiare la tua personalità. Ho studiato le opere e le vite degli autori più diversi ma, quando ho incontrato gli artisti delle isole Caraibiche, ho sentito un forte legame con loro.
Infatti, scavando nelle loro opere, ero affascinata dalla presenza ricorrente della figura della sirena - né donna né pesce, sempre cercando un luogo da chiamare casa, sempre cercando le sue vere radici. Finalmente, tornando a Venezia, ho realizzato che, forse, anch’io ero una
creatura dall’acqua perché, nonostante i miei molti viaggi, mi sono sempre sentita attirata dalla laguna.
Con la storia della nascita di mia madre, su una gondola, nel mezzo della laguna di Venezia, battezzata con la sua acqua, ho finalmente trovato le mie reali radici.
