Timothy Collins
Collins received his M. Arch. II from Syracuse University in Florence, Italy, and his B. Arch. from the Cooper Union, in New York. Collins is an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Architecture at the City College of New York and a Mixed Media Artist who focuses on the eschatological implications of collage. His assemblages have been exhibited at the Sheen Center for Thought and Culture and the Church of St. Paul the Apostle in New York City, as well as other galleries. He recently guest-edited an issue of “Listening/Journal of Communication Ethics, Religion, and Culture on “Catholic Art After Christendom,” and his essays and artwork have appeared in several publications, including St. Austin Review, Paulist.org, TheologyGaming.com, Jesus the Imagination: A Journal of Spiritual Revolution by Michael Martin, and Architects Draw: Freehand Fundamentals by Sue Ferguson Gussow. He has served as a core team member of the Openings Artist Collective, the Paulist Fathers’ initiative to dialogue with artists, and is a Board Member Emeritus of the Catholic Artist Connection, a non-profit organization serving Catholic artists in the New York City metropolitan area.

The Ephphatha City
Envisioning a Sacramental Sublimation of Estranged Metropolitan Forms
The city existentially questions humans and their relation to the earth. As a potential agent of estrangement, the city challenges traditional social arrangements with new spatial juxtapositions, requiring evermore elaborate inventions to endure the acedia of modern life. Through the sacramentalization of creation, whose reality is celebrated in the Eucharist, it is possible to sublimate the alienating influence of the metropolis. If we see the city instead as an extension of salvation history (a stage of grace and divine participation,) then its forms become an invitation to renewal and reconciliation, rather than rupture. This mixed media architectural model combines Catholic theology with collage techniques derived from early 20thcentury European Modernism. Collage can preserve and even celebrate the discarded fragments prevalent today, identifying the source of their dignity in Christ’s incarnational reality. Praying before the Blessed Sacrament, I understood that it is not only humans who seek salvation in the Resurrection. The fallibility of matter itself, as it groans in its own decay, also finds fulfillment in Christ—with the Eucharist as a proleptic sign of this eschatological materiality.

Per una Sublimazione Sacramentale di Forme Metropolitane Estraniate
La città interroga esistenzialmente gli esseri umani e il loro rapporto con la terra. Come potenziale agente di straniamento, la città sfida le organizzazioni sociali tradizionali con nuove giustapposizioni spaziali, richiedendo invenzioni sempre più elaborate capaci di sopportare l’accidia della vita moderna. Attraverso la sacramentalizzazione della creazione, la cui realtà è celebrata nell’Eucarestia, è possibile sublimare l’influenza alienante della metropoli. Se invece vediamo la città come un prolungamento della storia della salvezza (uno stato di grazia e di divina partecipazione,) allora le sue forme diventano un invito al rinnovamento e alla riconciliazione, piuttosto che alla rottura. Questo modello architettonico a tecnica mista combina la teologia cattolica con tecniche di collage derivate dal Modernismo europeo di inizio Novecento. Il collage può preservare e celebrare i frammenti scartati che sono oggi prevalenti, identificando l’origine della loro dignità nella realtà dell’incarnazione di Cristo. Pregando davanti al Santissimo Sacramento, ho capito che non sono solo gli umani che cercano la salvezza nella Risurrezione. Anche la fallibilità della materia stessa, mentre geme nella sua stessa decadenza, trova altresì adempimento in Cristo – con l’Eucarestia come segno prolettico di questa materialità escatologica.
