Tom Bessoir
Bessoir’s experimental films often use mathematics and randomness to explore perception and the structure of cinema. In the arts, he is well known for Microfilm (1979), Digits of Pi (2019), and his photography documenting downtown New York City.
He was born in Queens, New York City in 1957. From Astoria, he commuted by subway to attend The Bronx High School of Science. He studied mathematics and electrical engineering at The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art. While attending the Engineering School, he took advantage of Art School classes, focusing on film theory and studying experimental filmmaking with Robert Breer. In the late 1970s, he started photographing the downtown music scene.
His photographs have appeared on dozens of records as well as in films, books, magazines, and newspapers. In addition to being an accomplished experimental filmmaker and photographer, he has published research papers on chaos theory, on the safety of railroad signaling systems that use microprocessor technology, and on the mathematics of Scrabble.

È nato nel quartiere newyorkese del Queens nel 1957. Faceva il pendolare in metropolitana da Astoria per raggiungere la Bronx High School of Science. Ha studiato matematica ed ingegneria elettrica presso la Cooper Union per la Promozione della Scienza e dell’Arte. Synopsis:
Gulls mangling a fish head.
Photographed at the 700-year-old Rialto fish market in Venice, Italy.
Artist Statement:
One day in 2018 when roaming around Venice, I passed the Rialto fish market as they were cleaning up. I noticed some gulls had stolen a fish head and shot quite a few photographs of them pecking and mangling it.
When I returned to New York City, I began editing my photographs from the trip. Instead of individual prints of the gulls, I decided to create a book. But flipping back and forth while sequencing the images, I decided to make the photographs into a short experimental film.

Dichiarazione dell’Artista:
Un giorno, nel 2018, vagando per Venezia, passai per il mercato ittico di Rialto mentre stavano ripulendo. Notai che alcuni gabbiani avevano rubato una testa di pesce e gli scattai un bel po’ di fotografie mentre la stavano beccando e maciullando.
Una volta rientrato a New York, cominciai a editare le mie fotografie del viaggio. Anziché stampare foto individuali dei gabbiani, decisi di creare un libro. Ma, scorrendo avanti e indietro le immagini nell’intento di sequenziarle, decisi di farne un cortometraggio sperimentale.
