At the age of thirteen, I was reading Albert Camus’ acceptance speech of The Nobel Award and with a rush of emotion I knew I was going to be an Artist. Fortunately, I lived in New York City and was able to attend the High School of Music and Art and the Cooper Union—both in the city and both free. Upon graduation from the Cooper Union, I was awarded a scholarship to The Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Maine. Thus began my relationship to Maine, where I have lived for the past twelve years. I was fortunate to have impassioned and gifted instructors. I was also fortunate to spend eighteen magical years in Italy. I had an apartment in Venice and otherwise lived in Florence, Italy, where I learned the essential dignity of the individual.

All’età di 13 anni, stavo leggendo il discorso di ringraziamento di Albert Camus per il Premio Nobel e, preso da una fortissima emozione, capii che sarei diventato un artista. Fortunatamente, vivevo a New York e avevo la possibilità di frequentare la High School of Music and Art e la Cooper Union, entrambe in città ed entrambe libere. Learning What I Am About
I have been putting paint on canvas for seventy years—but it is always the next painting which I am excited about, and which will be achieved.
Venice inspired me in ways I am still processing in the stripping away the layers of times lived…of finding the past—haunting, irrevocable—in order to move forward.
I paint to learn, I love learning. It is the best thing we do.
I identify with the child’s face in the photo on the torn poster and I have been painting it for years and will go on painting it…

Alla Scoperta di Ciò che Sono
Ho dipinto tele per 70 anni – ma è sempre il quadro che verrà quello che mi entusiasma di più, e che sarà realizzato.
Venezia mi ha ispirato, in modi che ancora oggi sto scoprendo tra gli strati sovrapposti dei tempi vissuti…a cercare il passato, ossessionante, irrevocabile, per andare avanti.
Dipingo per imparare, amo imparare. È la cosa migliore che possiamo fare.
Mi rivedo nella faccia del bambino nella foto sul poster strappato che da anni sto dipingendo e che continuerò a dipingere…
