Paola Barcarolo & Margaret Matz
Barcarolo, Project Manager, Researcher, and Consultant, has over ten years of international experience. She earned a Ph.D. with honors in Civil-Environmental Engineering and Architecture with emphasis on Research and Design Innovation, Inclusive Design, Accessibility, Communication, Heritage Preservation, and Sustainability. She received her Master Degree and completed postgraduate studies in European Project Design and Management, Typhlology, Disability and Case Management, and Design for All. She works with universities, companies, public institutions, and NGOs on strategic design, research themes, and training projects on social inclusion and disability which are affiliated with UNESCO’s “for All” Programs.
Matz is an AIA registered architect and has 20 years of experience in designing new and sustainable renovation projects. Before founding Milestone Architecture, she served as Project Architect and Executive Principal with several major architectural firms, including KPFC and HLW. Her work has received many awards, most notably an Annual Record Interiors Feature for the Carmelo Pomodoro showroom, an annual interiors award. She is also a Visiting Professor at NYIT and former faculty at Pratt Institute. She holds a B. Arch. from the Cooper Union and a M.Sc. from Pratt Institute.

Barcarolo, project manager, ricercatrice, e consulente, ha oltre dieci anni di esperienza internazionale. Ha conseguito, con il massimo dei voti, un Dottorato di Ricerca in Ingegneria Civile Ambientale e Architettura, con particolare attenzione a: Ricerca, Sviluppo e Innovazione, Design Inclusivo, Accessibilità, Comunicazione, Valorizzazione del Patrimonio, e Sostenibilità. Ha inoltre conseguito Master e Corsi Post-Laurea in Europrogettazione, Tiflologia, Disability and Case Management, e Design for All. Lavora con Università, Aziende, Istituzioni Pubbliche, e ONG nell’ambito di Progettazione Strategica, temi di ricerca, e progetti di formazione sull’inclusione sociale e sulla disabilità, collegati ai Programmi “UNESCO per tutti.”
Matz è un’Architetta di AIA e per 20 anni ha curato progetti di restauro nuovi e sostenibili. Prima di fondare Milestone Architecture ha lavorato come progettista e dirigente amministrativo con i migliori studi di architetti, tra cui KPFC e HLW. I suoi lavori hanno ricevuto numerosi premi, in particolare l’Annual Record Interiors Feature per lo showroom di Carmelo Pomodoro e l’Annual Interiors Award. È Visiting Professor al NYIT e ha precedentemente insegnato anche al Pratt Institute. Si è laureata presso la Cooper Union e ha conseguito un Master al Pratt Institute.

The Revelation of Medieval and Contemporary Scole
In collaboration with Francisco Alba and Matt Hitscherich
Marking the 1600th anniversary of Venice’s establishment, this design foreshadows the city’s future in its past. The project examines Venice’s medieval urban fabric from a period when that city was inventing new public institutions such as the “scole” (Schools,) and proposes a functional use of the city’s squares adapting them as places for public learning during pandemics.
“Masked in Open Air” is based on actual emergency management practices implemented during the pandemic throughout the New York City area and is combined with the medieval phenomena of the emergence of “scole,” both public entities that reorganized their spaces to guarantee social distancing.
Ventilation of existing enclosed spaces and construction of open structures in public spaces, which was previously dedicated to other uses, was realized. The expansion of public space from the interior toward the exterior was akin to breathing.

La Rivelazione delle Scole Medievali e Contemporanee

Per celebrare i 1600 anni dalla sua fondazione, questo progetto intende presagire il futuro di Venezia partendo dal suo passato. Il progetto esamina il tessuto urbano medievale da un periodo in cui quella città stava inventando nuove istituzioni pubbliche, ad esempio le “scole,” e propone un uso funzionale dei campi della città adattandoli a luoghi di apprendimento pubblico durante le pandemie.
“Mascherati all’Aria Aperta” si basa sulle attuali pratiche della gestione delle emergenze implementate durante la pandemia nella città di New York ed è combinata con il fenomeno medievale dell’emergenza delle “scole,” entrambi enti pubblici che hanno riorganizzato i propri spazi per garantire il distanziamento sociale.
La ventilazione di spazi chiusi esistenti e la costruzione di strutture aperte negli spazi pubblici, che erano precedentemente dedicate ad altri usi, sono state realizzate. Espandere lo spazio pubblico da una dimensione interna a una esterna può essere paragonato al processo respiratorio.
